Red meat
Like almost everyone, I also love red meat. A good steak is something I never want to be without. However, sadly, it can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. The thing is that it has a lot of iron. And yes, your body needs it to avoid other illnesses such as anemia, chronic fatigue, muscle deterioration and etc. But too much iron hurts you a lot. Iron, or rather, excess iron, is stored in your brain. Its degeneration as age advances is even more accelerated when there is an excess of iron. Now, no, it doesn’t mean that you stop eating red meat, but it does mean that you do it consciously. Don’t give up hamburgers or roast meats, but consider reducing them to the weekly amount.
Carbohydrates and refined sugars
A 2012 study found that people ages 70 and older who ate a high-carbohydrate diet were almost four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. The theory behind why carbohydrates and sugars affect the brain so strongly is that they raise glucose and insulin levels, causing a spike in blood sugar. Over time, this can lead to insulin resistance. When this happens, our pancreas generates even more. These high levels of insulin circulating through the body can actually damage blood vessels in the brain, leading to problems with memory and ultimately Alzheimer’s.
Advanced Glycation End Products (AGES)
…What? Super strange name, but that’s what they are called. These are chemicals found naturally in our bodies and in some foods. In a recent study, the diets of 90 healthy people aged 60 or older with a high level of AGES had the worst cognitive performance. This includes foods such as: red meat (again), cheese, sweetened flour products (desserts), cream and butter are some examples. Among the foods that increase the risk of Alzheimer’s, those with a high level of AGES are first on the list.
And what can we do?
Well, apart from obviously cutting down on these products, we can emphasize eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, poultry, nuts, olive oil and unprocessed dairy products, in moderation. The almost impossible recommendation on red meat is once a week. Difficult for our culture where if there is no meat, we mistakenly think that it is not a complete meal. Another option is to eat a diet rich in brain-friendly foods like avocados, leafy greens, and olive oil.
