Frequently Asked Questions
Medical QuestionsWhy is the Cambridge methodology not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women?
Any woman who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or was pregnant in the last 3 months cannot use the Cambridge program. Pregnant or breastfeeding women need to increase their protein and energy levels and are advised to follow a diet rich in high biological value proteins, whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, etc. During pregnancy, care should be taken not to exceed the intake of certain micronutrients, such as vitamin A. All pregnant women should consult a nutritionist to receive guidance on the suitability of various dietary approaches.
What is ketosis? And is it harmful?
When adipose tissue releases fat, it travels to the liver where it can be used to create more fat or can be "burned" to produce energy. The energy production pathway produces ketone bodies. We all have a certain amount of ketone bodies in our blood at all times, but normally at low levels. These levels increase when a person fasts or follows a low-carbohydrate diet designed to induce "ketosis". "Ketosis" is a term used to describe a state in which the levels of ketone bodies accumulated in the bloodstream are high enough that they leave the body through the breath or urine. Physiological ketosis is a normal protective mechanism that reflects the way the body shifts its metabolism and converts fat into energy. The effect of excess ketone bodies varies from person to person — some feel euphoric, others lose their appetite. There is no sufficient evidence that physiological ketosis is harmful.
Will Cambridge Weight Plan cause ketosis?
Cambridge Weight Plan is specifically formulated with 44 grams of carbohydrates in addition to the proteins and fats present. This combination produces mild ketosis, which can benefit individuals, as it may cause a state of euphoria in some while also controlling appetite.
Does Cambridge Weight Plan affect the menstrual cycle?
Rapid weight loss can temporarily affect the regularity of the menstrual cycle; however, ovulation is unlikely to be interrupted. The metabolism of contraceptive pills may be affected during effective weight loss, so caution is recommended.
I had a cardiac arrest. Can I follow Cambridge Weight Plan?
Consult your doctor before starting any diet. Cambridge Weight Plan is a low-cholesterol, low-sodium and low-fat plan. If you suffered a cardiac arrest in the last three months, you are not eligible to follow Cambridge Weight Plan. However, after this period and depending on your recovery, and if you do not have a serious heart condition, you may be able to follow one of our programs — provided your doctor approves this through the official documentation provided by us.
I underwent cancer surgery. Can I follow Cambridge Weight Plan?
There are no specific contraindications to using Cambridge Weight Plan after cancer surgery, as long as the wound has fully healed and the medical and surgical team has approved your intention to lose weight. You must consult with the doctors who have detailed knowledge of your case.
Do I need my doctor's consent to follow Cambridge Weight Plan?
We recommend that anyone wishing to follow the program consult with their doctor before starting. All Cambridge Weight Plan clients need medical consent if they plan to follow the methodology. All individuals on medical prescription or with any pathology who plan to follow a diet of fewer than 1500kcal per day must also consult their doctor.
My doctor says I am clinically obese and that adopting a healthier lifestyle would help improve my quality of life. My Consultant insists that my doctor sign the medical registration form. Is this correct?
We recommend that all our clients, even those in perfect health, consult with their doctor before starting the program — particularly if the person has not had a consultation in the last 12 months. Obesity is an important factor in a number of medical conditions, and any obese person may have unknowingly developed a medical condition. If a person is on medical prescription or has an illness, the Consultant will ask for the doctor's signature on the Medical Registration Form to confirm that the information provided on it is correct.

I have diabetes and my condition is controlled through diet. Should I see a doctor before starting the Cambridge Methodology?
Yes. No person with diabetes should follow the methodology without their doctor's supervision. Cambridge Weight Plan programs can be used by clients with type 1 diabetes (requiring insulin) or type 2 diabetes (usually managed with diet and/or oral medication) when insulin is required, according to the Cambridge Weight Plan Protocol for Diabetics. The client must have full agreement from their doctor or healthcare professional stating that they are willing to adjust medications and monitor the client throughout the process. Adopting the maintenance program is a good strategy for achieving long-term good health.
What does a ketone test involve?
A ketone test is a simple urine test that indicates the presence of ketone bodies.
What is metabolic rate and can it be harmed by rapid weight loss?
Body weight and the amount of lean (muscle) tissue are the main determinants of metabolic rate. The human body is built to conserve energy efficiently. When energy intake decreases, the body adapts by reducing heat and energy loss, and consequently the metabolic rate decreases. After weight loss has occurred and a lower energy requirement has been established, the body's metabolism should return to the appropriate level for the new body weight and muscle tissue.
I am using the Sole Source program but I have a cough and cold. What can I take?
The diet contains all the nutrients required to stay healthy, but if you are fighting an infection and recovering, you should increase your energy intake to higher levels. Remember that cough and cold remedies usually contain sugar, so it is recommended that you choose sugar-free products.
Should I continue with the Sole Source program if I am donating blood?
You should not donate blood one week before or one week after following the Sole Source program. During that time it is recommended to increase energy intake levels to 1200kcal/day.
