6 mistakes that everyone makes when eating iron Copy Cwp April 9, 2018 No Comments Today I will talk to you about iron. We all like to maintain good nutrition. And many times we maintain a good diet and strive to eat everything our body needs. However, we often make mistakes when mixing foods. And this causes us to absorb fewer nutrients than we should. Iron is important for forming red blood cells, oxygenating our organs, regulating cell growth, assimilating B vitamins and regulating the pH of our blood. As its functions are important, we can easily notice that we are missing them. Some symptoms are: tiredness and weakness, headache, poor appetite, difficulty breathing, insomnia, paleness, low defenses and difficulty maintaining body temperature. When we have any of these symptoms, it may be because we are eating substances that inhibit iron absorption. These substances are: • Phytates: these drag iron into the intestine and prevent its absorption. We find them in chickpeas, amaranth, oats, brown rice and peanuts. • Phosphates: they can cause a lack of iron in our body and reduce its assimilation. We get them from chocolate, ice cream, soda, milk, nuts and egg yolk. • Lignin: this substance produces insoluble compounds and eliminates iron from the body. It can be found in seeds, leafy vegetables and some dried fruits. • Oxalates: prevent the absorption of iron and calcium. We can find them in green leafy vegetables and foods like beets. • Alkaline substances: They are known to neutralize the acid in the stomach, which prevents us from maintaining iron to absorb it. We obtain them through cucumber, celery, avocado, broccoli and pimi ents. • Tannins: these also cause less iron absorption and are found in coffee, tea, red wine and dark beer. When we eat foods rich in iron, it is best to supplement it with sources of vitamin C. Because they can double the absorption of iron. Remember that it is important to ingest all the vitamins and minerals to be well nourished.
