Beat fatigue with vitamin D

If you're tired, vitamin D could boost your energy levels, according to a new study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Vitamin D can help you have more energy in your daily activities. If you are tired, this vitamin could increase your energy levels, according to a new study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. In this study, people with vitamin D deficiency exercised their calves under a machine that measures the energy generated by cells’ mitochondria. After participants took vitamin D supplements, their mitochondrial function improved, and feelings of fatigue decreased. It is the first scientific link between this vitamin and mitochondrial activity. That is essential for muscular endurance, said lead researcher Akash Sinha, from the University of Newcastle. (In a separate study, Sinha and his team showed that low levels of vitamin D led to reduced mitochondrial function.) Wake up your cells by being outdoors. Sunlight is a natural source of this vitamin. 10 to 15 minutes of exposure provides a good dose, but the vitamin is also abundant in some fish. The Institute of Medicine recommends an intake of 600 IU per day. Which is the equivalent of 90gr. of cooked salmon. Fortified milk is a good source as well. You can also take a supplement, but make sure it’s vitamin D-3, which is best used by the body.
