Bitter melon fights diabetes and cancer

Consuming bitter melon juice, tea, or supplements can help reduce the symptoms of people with type 2 diabetes and cure several types of cancer.

Every day there are scientists looking for new methods to combat diabetes and cancer, two of the deadliest diseases there are, and this time they discovered that the consumption of bitter melon can achieve it. Or, at least, they found that this fruit can significantly reduce the symptoms of these serious diseases. According to various research, this fruit has various effects for people who suffer from diabetes and for those who may suffer from certain types of cancer.

Benefits of bitter melon

1. Reduces blood sugar levels

In this study, scientists showed that bitter melon can help reduce dangerous blood sugar levels. This was useful to cut the doses of medicines administered and consumed per day by diabetic patients.

2. Improves glucose intolerance

This study showed that consumption of the fruit can also improve glucose intolerance.

3. Decreases hemoglobin levels*

This research studied the effects of bitter melon supplements on lowering hemoglobin A1c levels in people with a recent diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and in people with A1c levels between 7% and 9% and poor glucose control. However, the benefits of bitter melon are many more and are not limited to just helping diabetic people.

4. Stops cancer

A group of researchers at St. Louis University discovered that bitter melon also prevents the growth of cells that cause breast cancer and other types of cancer such as pancreatic cancer. This vegetable contains molecules with anti-cancer properties that can inhibit the growth of cancer cells in the body, thanks to its high content of antioxidants that help protect cells and reduce damage caused by free radicals.

5. It is the cure for other health problems

Bitter melon also helps prevent premature aging due to its high content of vitamin A and antioxidants such as alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. In addition, this vegetable is good for stimulating digestion, eliminating constipation, fighting infections and curing some skin problems. *When I find patients who can undergo treatments that include this food, I usually recommend that they consume between 50 ml and 100 ml daily of supplement or bitter melon tea or the juice of this fruit, doses that they can divide throughout the day. In some cases, I recommend 1 small bitter melon per day, but it has to be well measured because it can cause diarrhea and hypoglycemia. If you plan to include supplements in your patients’ treatments, be sure to read the labels and know the product well. If you want advice on this and other topics, click here.
