Calcium may be a solution to C. Difficile infection

Calcium could be the solution against C. difficile, instead of the problem.

Copy Experience September 4, 2018 No Comments In new research, scientists have found that a dangerous bacteria capable of causing serious intestinal infections is caused by excess calcium in the environment. However, they theorize that this factor may also be the solution. Clostridium Difficile is the bacteria we are talking about. It has been found to mainly affect elderly patients living in nursing homes or those who have been confined to hospitals for a long period of time. The most prone patients are those on broad-spectrum antibiotic treatments, since these weaken the immune system. Among the discomforts caused by this bacteria, the least harmful is diarrhea. The most dangerous are colitis and inflammation of the colon, which in some cases can be fatal. The laboratory at the University of Michigan Medicine, in conjunction with the FDA, found that excess calcium causes C. Difficile to germinate. The reason why many of the patients mentioned above are more prone is that certain medications and supplements release excess calcium. In addition, many of them have low levels of vitamin D or their system cannot absorb calcium due to other ailments. The bacteria can find these excesses and germinate without problems. The interesting thing is that scientists suggest that, instead of reducing excess calcium levels, they should increase. It is expected that with the abundance of calcium all the dormant spores of C. Difficile will be activated, making them much easier to suppress using antibiotics. This can also disrupt the transmission process and contaminate ation. Even so, it is recommended that no action be taken until more research is completed.
