Do you know why your patients become demotivated?
Patients lose interest for many reasons and choose to return to the same eating habits and sedentary habits.
Patients lose interest for many reasons and choose to return to the same eating habits and sedentary habits. It is your mission as a health consultant to not allow this to happen and encourage your patient to go for more. It is said that after three months, typically 95% of patients abandon their eating plan and return to the lifestyle that had harmed them so much. This percentage is truly alarming and the reasons are currently unknown to many consultants. For this, we bring you a list of possible reasons why patients decide at the last minute to abandon their commitment to their health and well-being.
The consultant does not know strategies to maintain motivation
This could be the main reason and the alternative for patients to not abandon their goal. A consultant must keep in mind that many of their patients suffer from low self-esteem and it is very easy for them to become disillusioned by not losing weight or not seeing the results they expected. You don’t have to be a professional motivator, but you can educate your patient about their case, about how their body is reacting, and based on that, provide support in the procedure they are following. Many times patients want to see instant results and let them know that this process requires patience and dedication, it makes them see that if they follow their plan to the letter, the results will occur gradually.
The diets are very monotonous, the patient does not crave food
Another reason why a patient abandons his goal is that the diet proposed by the consultant turns out to be not very pleasant in terms of taste or visually. It is clear that not all patients will have the right to enjoy a diet that contains few limitations. But, in this type of case the consultant could implement alternatives to prepare a certain food that the patient needs. This is so that the patient sees their food as something delicious and wants to eat it without prejudice. Another good idea is to include photographs of the dish that the patient is going to consume.
Lack of psychological bases to persuade the patient
This last point must also be considered. Invest in some training that has to do with coaching or neurolinguistic programming. This will give you the necessary tools to convince your patient and in certain cases know what they need to maintain their conviction. It is important that you do an evaluation of your patient to know what is happening with him and what he needs in terms of food and nutrition, but going a little further can help you speed up his procedure and know what problem you have to solve. Remember that your goal is for the patient to reach their ideal weight and for their lifestyle to be different from what they had previously.
