Nearly one in seven (14%) families found that meals were moved. With a fifth reporting they never or rarely had the opportunity to talk during meals. The document recommends that the Government’s guidelines should be simple. It also says that some of the current targets, such as providing up to two grams of salt to children under three, expect parents to monitor nutritional targets in a realistic and impractical way. Valeria Skafida, author of the study and researcher at the University’s Center for Research on Family and Relationships, said: “It is likely that in certain cases, children are eating different foods, with a less nutritious option. This is already known to be the case with children’s menus in restaurants. So children are consuming the same foods as their parents.”
