How dangerous is it to eat too much meat?

Is it dangerous to eat red meat in excess? Learn its consequences and opt for vegetarian options to take care of your health.

If we have already seen research after research coming out about how bad it is to eat too much meat, it is surprising that it is still so present in our regular diet. It is not necessary to abandon it completely, but it would not hurt us at all to learn to lower it. And it is very difficult because we believe in meat as the top of the dishes. To give us a little inspiration, recent research has found that processed meats, such as sausages and bacon, when eaten frequently, increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer. This new research analyzed 99 studies, including data on 29 million people worldwide, of whom more than a quarter of a million were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. It was also investigated how diet, weight and physical activity affect the risk of this type of cancer. Other factors that increased the odds aside from processed meats were:

  • Eat a lot of red meat, such as beef and pork (above 500 grams a week)
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Consume two or more alcoholic drinks daily (30 grams of alcohol) “…This study shows that many people can make changes in their lives to drastically reduce this risk… The results of this comprehensive report are solid and clear: diet and lifestyle play an important role in the development of colorectal cancer.” said Edward L. Giovannucci, MD, ScD, lead author of the report. The report concluded that eating approximately three servings (90 grams) of whole grains daily reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 17%. Similar results were also seen when eating fish and foods such as oranges, spinach and strawberries, which contain vitamin C. Regarding exercise, people who are physically active have a much lower risk of developing colon cancer. It should be noted that here we are talking about colon cancer and not rectal cancer. In short, yes, a life change is difficult, but how much more research do we need before making a decision? Don’t sacrifice your health!
