Read the nutrition label like an expert

The nutritional label of a product tells you everything you need to know to know how to eat well and not consume bad things.

We find ourselves in a conundrum every time we look at the back of a food package. These are labeled on all the food products we consume and apparently they are presented to us coded only to confuse us more and prevent us from following our diets or eating plans to the letter. Understanding and interpreting the nutritional content tables will greatly facilitate you in leading a healthy life and balanced nutrition.

How to read labels

  • At the top of the label you will find information related to the serving size. Measurements can be considered such as: cup, serving and their equivalent in grams or milliliters if applicable.
  • Calorie content: This refers to the number of kilocalories per portion mentioned. Fat calories indicate how many fat calories a serving contains.
  • Recommended daily percentage: This section includes information on how many nutrients in a portion of food contribute to a total daily intake and you can keep track of what you should eat more or what you should restrict from your diet. This will be related to the lifestyle you lead, whether you are sedentary or lead a fully active life. The DV daily value: The percentage is a guide that will guide you in relating the nutrients in a standard ration as well as the contribution to your daily diet. This can give you ideas about the amount of nutrients in the serving. This section will also indicate combinations of other foods to balance them during the day.
  • Total fat per serving: This section provides a breakdown per gram of how much fat a serving contains. It is divided into:
  • Omegas
  • Saturated fats
  • Trans fats
  • In this section you will find the breakdown in grams of contents such as:
  • Proteins
  • Sodium
