Self-image: How do I improve it?
Self-image or self-esteem is an issue that should be more important since it affects your quality of life in many aspects...
Self-image is the way one perceives, imagines, feels and acts with respect to one’s own body. This body image is not a photograph of the body, but is loaded with a lot of subjectivity (emotion, cognition, etc.) It has been shown that women with body dissatisfaction have a distorted body image, where their body appears larger than it is. There are problems associated with poor body image. Low Self-Esteem, Gender Identity Problems, Interpersonal Anxiety, Depression, and Problems in Sexual Relationships The construction of self-image is a complex process that has a very early origin and involves psychological, emotional and social interaction factors. The maternal figure is also a very important factor in the construction of self-image. The child’s body with all its sensory perceptions is in constant contact with the mother’s body (her voice, smell, skin, heat) and this union allows the bases of the image that the baby will have of himself to be formed. Some ways to improve and have a more positive aspect of self-perception are:
- Write the positive aspects of our life, covering childhood to the present.
- Set short-term goals about how we can improve something we don’t like in our lives.
- Avoid looking in the mirror and judging negative aspects of the body, valuing the positive aspects such as being able to breathe, walk, see and not having a physical disability.
- We are all human beings with defects and virtues, but thinking of yourself as having more virtues than defects strengthens self-confidence. Do not compare yourself to others because each person is different and that is what leads us to authenticity.
