Do you wake up at night and can’t go back to sleep? Do you spend your time on Facebook at 2 am on a Tuesday because sleep doesn’t come? Sleep better with these nutrients. Certain nutrients in your diet can help lead to healthier sleep patterns, according to a study of 4,500 people. Researchers from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) found that those who ate a varied diet slept better and longer. Likewise, people who slept between 7 and 8 hours a day were healthier than those who did not. The nutrients identified as contributing to restful sleep were the following: Lycopene: Antioxidant that helps prevent cancer, found in red tomatoes, watermelon and pink grapefruit. Vitamin C: A cup of strawberries or a medium Kiwi has more than 100% of the vitamin C you need. Selenium: An ounce (30 grams) of Brazil nuts or a can of tuna are excellent for obtaining this anti-inflammatory that will help you sleep. Theobromine: Compound that also protects the heart, found in tea and dark chocolates. Lauric acid: Coconut oil is the most common and complete source of this saturated fatty acid which, for a change, is good for the body.
