On this occasion, because it is International Women’s Day, we decided to dedicate a space to some of the most notable women in history. For my part, I am proud to be a woman. The most notable women in world history are few and far between. This is due to the ancient belief that a woman’s responsibilities were to her family. Consequently, many talented women were discouraged from pursuing their dreams and ambitions. However, a large number of women have managed to shine even in adverse circumstances. In history there have been women who served as great leaders, scientists and brilliant athletes. In this article I am going to offer my list of the greatest women in history. Who is your favorite?
Empress Wu
Even today where gender inequality is much less prevalent, there are still almost no women in a leadership position. However, there once existed a woman who rose to the top position in her country at a time when it was even illegal for women to venture outside their homes. She was Empress Wu, the only female ruler in Chinese history and possibly the greatest leader. During her reign (one of her longest) her royal title was “Emperor” instead of “Empress” to emphasize that she was not someone else’s subordinate. Politically, Empress Wu was a ruthless leader. She was famous for showing no mercy towards those who opposed her and she had many of those she had to deal with. Apparently, many of the men were not happy that the leader of their country was a woman and they dedicated themselves to creating numerous plans in order to dethrone her. In terms of managing the empire, Wu was a very capable ruler. The Chinese enjoyed a Golden Age during his reign. I bear no grudge against legitimate critics of his policies. On the contrary, she often accepted criticism and even promoted her critics to high positions. Wu’s greatest contribution to history was his insistence on meritocracy. As a result, many talented but less privileged Chinese were given the opportunity to showcase their skills. Marie Curie Throughout history, women were prohibited from participating in scientific activities. This is because women were considered to have lower intelligence in relation to men. Consequently there were not many women scientists and engineers. Marie Curie was one of the very few exceptions. Not only was she a capable scientist, Curie was actually one of the best. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in science, in fact she won it twice. What makes his achievement so notable is the fact that he managed to win these two awards in different fields, one in physical science (1903) and another in chemistry (1911). This is one of the greatest feats in the history of science. Marie Curie puts Aristotle to shame in her views on women’s intelligence.
Babe Zaharias
When it comes to women and sports, female athletes are often seen as fragile and limited. The great Babe Zaharias certainly didn’t change the public perception of women’s athletics, but she proved them wrong. Babe did not limit himself in his sports sphere. She was a multiple-time gold medalist and track and field record holder, entered the Golf Hall of Fame with 41 LPGA victories, and was an All-American in basketball. Even more impressive is that she often competed against men in different sports disciplines with commendable success. Babe Zaharias is without a doubt the best female athlete.
