1. Set realistic expectations

Just like the old story of the tortoise and the hare, when it comes to getting started, slow and steady wins everything. Don’t expect to run a 5K in your first week, and don’t feel down if you’re still struggling to run a mile after 6 weeks. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, you should listen to your body and go at your own pace.

2. Learn to walk before you run

If you are not used to doing any type of exercise, start improving your fitness with walking. It is still an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise with great health benefits.

3. Invest in proper running shoes

Comfort comes first, right? Before you start “hitting the sidewalks,” make sure you have the right footwear for your workout.

4. Calm down

As with point number 1, don’t try to sprint on your first outing and don’t try to run a full 5k. Start at a steady pace that is comfortable and try to run for one minute. Then walk for two minutes, to gradually increase your resistance.

5. Heat and cool

Make sure you warm up properly before you start running with a brisk walk for about 5 minutes. At the end of your run, walk at a more casual pace for another 5 minutes to allow your body to cool down. Don’t forget to stretch afterwards too. *

6. Put it on the calendar

If you schedule your running dates, you’re more likely to stick to them, so commit. Why not involve others? Find a running partner so you can encourage each other. Aim to run 2 to 3 days a week, and be sure to schedule rest days to allow your body to recover.

7. Know the technology
