Sustainable water? It seems like we’re in the golden age of liquid wellness. We’ve seen everything from bone broths, dairy-free milks, vinegars, craft kombuchas, enhanced waters, and other liquid trends. What we drink is rapidly transforming, making us healthier in the process. So how can we balance all those good intentions with green choices? Beyond reading ingredient labels, here are five easy ways to make whatever you eat just as good for the planet.
- Choose purified tap water over bottled water. Drinking filtered water is a key part of a clean lifestyle. Filtered tap water is a less wasteful and more economical option than bottled water. You can add a splash of apple cider vinegar, a splash of orange or a few sprigs of mint for flavor.
- Where does it come from? According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), livestock used in the meat, milk and non-food industries (such as farms that use animals for energy) are the largest source of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. You can help reduce their carbon footprint and make a change, just in the milk aisle. Switch from cow’s milk to non-dairy milk more often. A study published in JAMA found that switching just 3% of daily calories from animal protein to plant protein is much healthier for anyone.
- Use, refill, repeat. Bringing reusable bottles to the store could become as routine as bringing your own reusable bags. This is a good thing, considering that more than 40 years after the launch of the first universal recycling symbol, only 14% of plastic packaging is collected for recycling, according to a report from the World Economic Forum. Not only will you help reduce the environmental impact, but you will also have spare parts at a lower price.
- Try coconut water powder . Coconut water is one of nature’s best thirst quenchers. Rich in potassium and other electrolytes that help replenish your body during or after exercise.
- Uncork wines with SIP certification. Third-party certifications such as F air Trade Certified and Rainforest Alliance Certified mean greater transparency in your production. Growers typically follow a rigorous set of agricultural practices to help reduce pesticide and fertilizer use, protect biodiversity, and even optimize water and energy use. Just as we take care of ourselves, we must take care of our environment.
