Three big lies about diets

...helps us find the truth regarding the big lies about diets and food. 1. To lose weight you need to drink a lot of water

Did you know that the scale does not always tell the truth and that the myth of drinking water to lose weight is false? Dr. Camilo Silva, specialist in the Department of Endocrinology and Nutrition at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, helps us find the truth regarding the big lies about diets and food.

1. To lose weight you need to drink a lot of water

FALSE. The feeling of hunger and thirst can be confused and, in addition, relatively frequently, people cover their water needs at the expense of drinks with caloric content (soft drinks, juices, milk, etc.) or foods richer in water (fruits, etc.). However, in a balanced diet it should not be advisable to drink large amounts of water. A good parameter that helps us assess our hydration status is diuresis: if the urine is scarce and of an intense color, we are most likely dehydrated; If, on the other hand, it is abundant and with little color we will probably be well hydrated.

2. In the treatment of overweight and obesity, the goal of the diet is to lose weight

FALSE. The real objective of the diet is lose body fat, since it is the compartment that is found in an excessive amount and generates the diseases associated with overweight and obesity (diabetes, arterial hypertension, cancer, etc.).

3. The scale always tells the truth

FALSE. Weight losses are not always fat and neither are weight gains. It is common for a person to gain or lose weight at the expense of water or muscle mass, therefore the simple data of body weight does not help us to evaluate the success of a diet in the treatment of overweight or obesity.
